Social Security Disability, What is it? And How to Get Your SSI Approved

Are you struggling to get by? Are you living with a disability, but don’t know what options you have for support? Social Security Disability (SSD) might be the answer.

Social Security Disability (SSD) is a government program designed to provide financial assistance to those who can no longer work due to their disability.  This program has helped millions of individuals unlock greater opportunities and stability in their lives.   If you have a long-term or permanent disability that prevents you from working and earning enough money to support yourself, it can provide monthly cash benefits to help cover basic needs like food, housing, and medical care. It also gives you access to vocational training and other assistance.

At Defenders for You, our goal is to help people understand how to apply, qualify, and receive SSI benefits if they are eligible. We’ll walk you through the process – from assembling documents, gathering evidence of your disability, filling out an application and appealing denied claims. Our website is full of information on how to apply, what to expect when applying, and all of the forms you’ll need for submitting a successful claim.

By qualifying for SSD, individuals gain access to medical benefits, access to financial assistance, and importantly, independence.  With our expert help, you can rest assured that your application will receive the attention it deserves, and your best interests will be taken into account every step of the way

  • Attend a consultative exam to evaluate your disability, if needed.
  • Prepare for and schedule an in-person interview with a Disability Determination Services interviewer
  • Answer any questions from the DDS regarding your medical condition or other information included in your application.
  • A disability hearing with a Social Security judge may be requested on your behalf.
  • Wait up to three months for a decision regarding your eligibility for SSI benefits.
  • After review, you may receive an approval letter or denial letter from the Social Security Administration.
  • If denied, reapply by filing an Appeal Form with any updated information that can demonstrate your eligibility for benefits.
  • Follow up with your case manager or lawyer to ensure that the process is progressing in the right direction.
